KUALA LUMPUR: A boyfriend is believed to have set a 16-year-old girl on fire, the third such case of jealousy in two months.
City CID chief Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the victim, identified as Nurul Firzanah Mat Zaki, is now in a coma after being torched by her beau in Wangsa Maju, early Monday morning.
Firzanah is suffering from 25 per cent burns on her face and body.
"Her 18-year-old boyfriend, identified as Mohd Amir Mohd Anuar, is believed to have gone into hiding," Ku said at a press conference at the KL police headquarters.
Police said the motive could be jealousy and that the boyfriend could have done it after a fight with the victim who had dined with him on Sunday night.
Firzanah had told her stepmother she was meeting her boyfriend.
It is learnt the family had allowed her to go out with him.
At about 4am, the stepmother received a call from Firzanah who told her she had been torched in Wangsa Maju, and was rushed to hospital by residents.
Her father, Mat Zaki Mat Hussin lodged a police report and produced a picture of the teen.
Police have classified the case as attempted murder.
On June 22, Chan Yee Mun, 22, was allegedly torched by her boyfriend after a tiff.
She succumbed to her injuries, four days later.
Police arrested her 33-year-old boyfriend and charged him with murder on July 1.
On June 29, bank clerk P. Yoga Ambiga was brutally attacked and set on fire outside her apartment in Ampang.
Three men, aged between 20 and 33, were charged with her murder.
